Good advice when to plant in your garden - Danish climate

When to plant.

In order for your plants to have the best possible growing conditions and opportunities to take root, it's a good idea to consider when to plant.

Here we'll try to give you an overview of when it's a good idea to pre-sprout and when it's best to plant out in the garden. jord i plantekasser

Spring:

  • Evergreen shrubs are best planted in August/September to avoid the risk of them drying out. Water all evergreens throughout the year (including winter) if the soil seems dry. They do not go dormant.
  • Plant seed bulbs in early April. Average temperature should preferably be above 7 degrees.

Summer: 

  • Summer flowers, dahlias and gladiolus do not tolerate frost, so they should not be planted out until mid-May.
  • Plant strawberries in July and August. This will ensure a good strawberry harvest the following year.
  • Planting out pre-sprouted vegetables.
  • Beans (broad beans), carrots, carrots, fennel, kale can be planted in mid-May.
  • Common green bush beans in early June.

Fall:

  • Roses are planted from September to December
  • New spring bulbs such as snowdrops, tulips and daffodils are best in September/October.
  • Hedges are best planted in the fall.
  • Fruit trees have the opportunity to put down roots and have moist soil around them.
  • Rhondendron is best planted in the fall

Winter:

  • Deciduous trees (i.e. shrubs that lose their leaves) are best planted from November to April.

Perennials:

  • Perennials are best planted in April/May or September/October. Flowering should not be until fall, as the roots grow slowly during flowering.
  • Perennial herbs can be planted throughout the year. Always water during the growing season.

    GOOD ADVICE:

    Use raised bed soil or uncontaminated soil to plant your plants in.

    Water only in the morning or evening when the sun is not at its brightest.

    Sow in well-spaced rows.

    Use organic fertilizer, natural fertilizer or compost. - And remember with fertilizer: little but often.
